Food Waste Pretreatment

The BioSep pretreatment process has been specially developed to separate plastics and packaging material from all kinds of food waste. It is a key component in the BioPrePlant System that includes a precrusher to open bags and containers and remove ferrous metals. Materials are transported to the BioSep via spiral conveyors or pumps. A rotor pulls material pass a sieve and simultaneously presses the soft digestible fractions through the sieve. Rejects are cleaned, dried and discharged. A second stage of the BioSep has a finer sieve to remove small pieces of plastics and packaging. www.biopreplant.com

Mini Skid Steer

The S450TX mini skid steer recently introduced by Vermeer is a compact machine with the ability to accommodate a wide range of attachments. It has a 500-lb operating capacity with a 1,430 lb tipping capacity and a 4-pump hydraulic system. A single pilot-operated joystick is integrated into the S450TX, which makes the machine easier to maneuver in comparison to manual control systems. Vermeer is offering a choice of engines (gas or diesel) and track options. www.vermeer.com

Biogas Engine Oils

Brad Penn® Biogas Engine Oils are specifically designed and tailored for use in engines fueled by biogas generated from anaerobic digestion. They were developed by American Refining Group in Bradford, Pennsylvania, which is the oldest continuously running lube refinery in the world, notes Kenneth Tyger, oil monitoring analyst. The biogas engine oils have sufficient levels of reserve alkalinity required to effectively neutralize acidic components generated by combustion of biogas. They also have enhanced antiwear and detergency to provide engine component protection. To date, Brad Penn Biogas Oils are used at 24 farms (several pending) and two landfills in five states, adds Tyger. Customers report increased oil drain intervals, and analysis of the drained oil is showing that engine wear metals profiles have remained consistently low, a gauge of engine protection. www.amref.com

Stump Grinder

The new Model 2550XP self-propelled stump grinder from Bandit Industries features beltless hydrostatic direct-drive and is available with up to 44 horsepower. “The Model 2550XP is a high production stump grinder that has the power to go after large-scale projects or big stumps,” says Jason Morey of Bandit. “It can tackle just about any size stump, and with no belts there is far less downtime for maintenance.” The reduced maintenance comes from the high-power hydrostatic motor used to directly power the cutter wheel with no parasitic power loss. This eliminates the need for a clutch, jackshaft, drive belt, belt-tensioning system, and the many sheaves and bearings associated with those components. www.banditchippers.com

Moisture Resistant Compostable Packaging

Earthcycle unveiled its improved water-resistant packaging as part of its line of certified home compostable, recyclable and renewable products. It uses a highly refined palm pulp formula that helps maintain the strength and integrity of the packaging under high moisture environments, according to Shannon Boase, president of Earthcycle. “We set out to develop a packaging formula that works especially well with mushrooms, which are one of the most challenging produce items at any store because of the high water content,” she says. The containers are used for all types of produce. www.earthcycle.com

Commercial Waste Materials Recovery Facility

In August, Republic Services, Inc. started processing commercial waste from 8,000 businesses in San Jose, California as part of its long-term collection and processing contract with the city of San Jose. The recycling facility, located at the Newby Island Resource Recovery Park in Milpitas, has capacity to process 110 tons/hour of multiple waste streams. Republic worked with Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) to design, manufacture and install the system. In addition to the commercial stream, the system also processes recyclables from 85,000 households and has the capacity to process 420,000 tons of material annually. “In San Jose we are dealing with four distinct streams: organics, commercial dry waste, commercial single stream, and residential single stream,” says Rich Reardon, director of sales and marketing for BHS. “Breaking down the material stream and supplying processes to address each fraction ensures recovery optimization.” www.bulkhandlingsystems.com

Gas Engine Remanufacturing

GE has launched its reUp parts remanufacturing program for installed Waukesha gas engines. Under the reUp program, GE will remanufacture engine components to their original specifications while also incorporating the latest engineering updates to maximize performance and reduce the risks of equipment failure and unplanned downtime for service. The program is first being offered to customers in North America before it is expanded to other regions of the world. www.ge-waukesha.com
