New York City

Citizens Committee for New York City, in partnership with the Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and her Solid Waste Advisory Board are awarding up to $30,000  to community composting projects in neighborhoods across the city. The deadline to submit a composting grant application is March 27, 2015.

The main goal of this grant program is to increase awareness about the necessity for New Yorkers to compost and for grant recipients to build new or expand current compost bin systems.  Community garden groups, student groups, tenant and block associations, and other environmental groups are eligible to apply.

Through the grant program, funds are provided for volunteer and school groups to build compost bin systems and materials and supplies needed in order to ensure project sustainability. Over $50,000 in composting micro-grants was made to 86 grassroots composting groups over the past two years. Two recipients in 2014 include Fifth Street Farm Project in the East Village, which set up a vokashi composting system on the roof top farm of a complex of public schools; and Yellow Hook Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in Brooklyn, which constructed a new compost bin system to begin collecting food scraps from the community gardens in the 4.5 acre parkland where they work.
