The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO), which services Franklin County and neighboring areas near Columbus, has expanded its food waste recycling program offerings. There are now more than 30 food waste drop-off sites throughout Franklin County. A new Food Waste Drop Off Expansion Program has been launched to expand existing programs or create new ones. SWACO provides 100% reimbursement of the costs, which include procurement of carts, an enclosure and signage. The Authority also redesigned its Recycling and Food Waste Champions initiative to incentivize businesses to implement recycling and organics diversion programs. For example, standard recycling and organics bins are available at no cost, as is signage. Start-up reimbursement is available for six months of collection service (not to exceed $2,500). To earn Champion status, businesses are required to conduct a visual audit of their material streams, complete a recycling and/or food waste diversion plan, and provide employee education.
