Since its founding in 1987, the Cornell Waste Management Institute (CWMI) — housed within Cornell University’s Section of Soil and Crop Sciences in the School of Integrative Plant Science — has conducted research and provided technical assistance and training “in service of organics recycling and reuse.” In April, Cornell announced that NY-CORE, the New York Center for Organics Recycling and Education, is a new initiative that will continue the work of the CWMI, supported by funding from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. “The NY-CORE will lead the development of on-site training and technical assistance to farming communities and organic residual generators,” noted the announcement. “Such activities will include training and technical support on composting methods, feedstock management, equipment selection, operations, compost application, and identification of haulers.” The NY-CORE will also conduct research, development, and documentation of best management practices in organics recycling.” A Director and Senior Extension Associate is being sought to lead the organization.
