The American Biogas Council recently updated its state-by-state overview of the existing 2,500 biogas projects and highlights the advantages of developing the 17,000 new systems that could be built. Each state’s fact sheet shows how the state ranks for its biogas potential, its current biogas output, the number of biogas projects that could be added, and feedstock available. Also estimated are the energy, economic, climate, and recycling benefits of building out the potential projects in each state. New York State, for example, ranks #5 out of the 50 states for its biogas production potential of 161.6 billion cubic feet/year, according to the fact sheet. There are 185 operating biogas systems in the state, including anaerobic digesters installed at 118 wastewater treatment plants and 38 farms. There are five stand-alone food waste digesters and 24 landfills that recover biogas. A PDF of each state’s profile can be downloaded.
