David Batker, Earth Economics, speaks about measuring the full value of ecosystems.
“We’re a nonprofit, we title ourselves ‘Earth Economics’ because there’s still something not in the equation. Just like we didn’t measure GDP and unemployment in the ’30s, no one had ever measured unemployment, we haven’t been measuring the benefits of our soil. That’s crazy. We’re not looking at it as a capital asset. We’re not looking at the full value of our air and water.” So says Earth Economics founder David Batker in his keynote address “Valuing Ecosystem Services” at the 26th Annual BioCycle West Coast Conference 2012.
