Government Support for Community Composting webinar series

Are you a local government interested in reducing and recycling wasted food and curious to learn how you can help spur community-scale composting? Or perhaps you are a community-oriented composter or microhauler searching for public-private partnerships?  Join these virtual events to learn how cities are providing community-scale composting with a wide range of support including:

  • Establishing community composting at urban gardens
  • Training community members on how to compost successfully
  • Funding equipment for small sites
  • Funding staff at existing nonprofit organizations
  • Incorporating community composting into climate action strategies and other plans
  • Granting access to land
  • Awarding major contracts for curbside and drop-off food scraps collection

These webinars are among the resources the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) offers to support a distributed and diverse composting infrastructure that includes community-scale and on-farm composting.

Communities that Compost: Target Organics & The BioCycle Access Survey webinar

Find out the current state of the ways communities in the U.S. are taking up food scrap composting with this overview of BioCycle’s 2021 Residential Food Scraps Collection Access Survey, seen through the eyes of three very different communities/collection programs. Panelists are Xinci Tan, Organics Program Manager, Zero Waste Sonoma (CA); Kala Fisher, Solid Waste Manager, City of St. Louis Park (MN); and Conor Miller, Founder, Black Earth Compost (MA). The facilitator will be Nora Goldstein of BioCycle, and this event is sponsored by USCC member EcoSafe Zerowaste. The program is hosted under the banner of the Target Organics Compost Programs Resource Hub, and the volunteer committee in charge of it.
